Can You Use Your Current Glasses Prescription for New Lenses?

New lenses for frames you love? You may be able to use your current eyeglass prescription. Check its expiration date, your vision and your frames before ordering.

New lenses for your existing frames do not automatically mean a new prescription. You can use an unexpired eyeglass prescription if it still meets your vision needs. Lenshaus also checks whether your frame and prescription are a workable match before making the lenses.

Check the expiration date first

Look for the expiration date on your eyeglass prescription. If it has expired, you will need an updated prescription before buying prescription lenses. If the date is missing or unclear, ask your prescriber to confirm it. Use your eyeglass prescription for glasses lenses. A contact lens prescription is a different document.

Are you still seeing clearly?

If signs look blurrier, close work has become harder, or you find yourself squinting through your current glasses, talk with your eye doctor before ordering. The National Eye Institute recommends an exam when you are having trouble with your vision, even while wearing glasses. Keep up with regular exams as often as your eye doctor recommends.

Will your frames work with the prescription?

Your frame's shape and condition, along with your prescription, affect which replacement lenses are suitable. Start with a photo of your frames. Lenshaus reviews the frame and prescription together before production. If you are unsure about your pair, talk with the Lenshaus optical team.

How do you send your prescription to Lenshaus?

In the lens builder, you can upload a photo or PDF of your eyeglass prescription, enter its values manually, or choose to send it later. Check any values you type against the prescription. Need help with the abbreviations? Read our SPH, CYL, AXIS and ADD guide. If PD is missing, see what to do when your prescription does not include PD.

Do not have a copy? Ask your prescriber. The Federal Trade Commission says a prescriber must give you your eyeglass prescription after an eye exam that includes a refraction, at no extra charge.
