Your prescription
Find an eye exam near you
An eye exam is done by an eye doctor, not by Lenshaus. After the exam, ask for a copy of your eyeglass prescription. You can use that copy to order lenses for frames you already own.
How to get your prescription
Schedule an eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Bring your current glasses if you have them. When the exam is finished, ask the office for a copy of your eyeglass prescription before you leave.
Under the FTC Eyeglass Rule, the prescriber who examines your eyes must give you a copy of your eyeglass prescription after the exam, at no extra charge. You can take that prescription to any seller. This page is general information, not legal advice. The current rule is published by the FTC.
What to ask for
- A copy of your eyeglass prescription, including the values for each eye.
- Your pupillary distance (PD), if the office measured it. PD is the distance between your pupils. Lens makers use it to position each lens.
- The exam date, if it is printed on the prescription.
If PD is not on the prescription, ask whether it was measured. Some offices measure PD and some do not. The FTC Eyeglass Rule covers your right to a copy of the prescription. Whether PD was taken is a separate question for that visit.

Questions about prescriptions
How do I get an eyeglass prescription?
Schedule an eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. After the exam, ask for a copy of your eyeglass prescription. You can use that copy to order lenses.
Does my eye doctor have to give me my prescription?
The FTC Eyeglass Rule requires the prescriber who examines your eyes to give you a copy of your eyeglass prescription after the exam, at no extra charge. You can use that prescription at any seller. Read the current rule on the FTC website. This is general information, not legal advice.
What should I ask my eye doctor to include?
Ask for a copy of your eyeglass prescription. Also ask for your pupillary distance (PD) if it was measured. PD is the distance between your pupils, and it is used to position lenses.
Does Lenshaus provide eye exams?
No. Lenshaus replaces lenses in frames you already own. An eye doctor performs the exam and writes the prescription. The search on this page shows businesses returned by Google. Lenshaus is not affiliated with those businesses.
Do I need a prescription for every lens order?
Lenses that correct your vision need an eyeglass prescription. Non-prescription lenses, such as clear or sun lenses without vision correction, do not. You can choose that option in Build My Lenses.
