Can You Put Prescription Lenses in Your Own Sunglasses?

I've been making lenses for 17 years. Here's what to know before you put prescription lenses in sunglasses you already own.
Short answer: often, yes. If your sunglass frame is made to hold prescription lenses, we can usually make prescription sun lenses for it. You mail us the frame, and we fit the new lenses and send it back.
Which sunglass frames usually work?
- Plastic and acetate full-rim
- Metal full-rim
- Semi-rimless
- Rimless
- Sport and wrap frames with prescription-ready curves
Not sure about yours? Send us a photo of your frames. The lab reviews it before anything is made.
What can make a frame harder to fit?
- Shape: very curved or wrap-style frames need a closer look.
- Condition: cracks, loose parts, corrosion or past repairs can make a frame risky to work on.
- Design: a frame that isn't made to hold prescription lenses may not work.
Your frame's condition, shape and prescription decide what's possible. If we spot a problem, we contact you before production.
Which sun lenses can I choose?
- Solid tint: an even shade across the lens.
- Gradient tint: darker at the top, lighter at the bottom.
- Polarized: reduces reflected glare, such as light bouncing off water or a road.
- Mirror finish: a reflective outer coating.
Also available: light-adaptive (Transitions) lenses, clear indoors and darker in sunlight.
Availability depends on your prescription, your frame and your other lens selections. See Lens Options, or compare tinted vs. polarized lenses.
Do Lenshaus sun lenses block UV?
Our solid-tint and polarized sun lenses block 100% UV. Choosing gradient, mirror, light-adaptive or clear lenses? Ask our optical team about UV protection before you order.
What does it cost?
- Single vision prescription lenses are $99, all in: polycarbonate, standard anti-reflective coating, the mailer with a prepaid return label, free doorstep pickup where available (or drop-off with the carrier), return shipping and one free remake within 30 days.
- Progressive and bifocal lenses are $149, all in. Polarized and mirror finishes are available on progressive lenses too.
- Tint, polarization and mirror finishes are paid upgrades. They're priced in the lens builder, and you review your selections and total before payment.
- Base prices and example upgrade prices: How much does replacing your lenses cost?
Which lens material should I pick?
- Polycarbonate is included.
- Thinner or lighter materials are optional upgrades. Compare them in Polycarbonate, Trivex or High-Index.
Do I need a new prescription?
- Use your current, valid prescription.
- Not sure it's still right? Ask your eye doctor before ordering.
- Planning to drive or play sports in them? Ask your eye doctor whether your prescription suits it.
How does ordering work?
- Build your lenses in the lens builder and add your prescription.
- We mail you a protective kit with a prepaid return label and a note with a QR code. The QR code opens your private pickup page.
- Pack your sunglasses and put the prepaid return label on the package. Where doorstep pickup is available, scan the QR code and wait for our confirmation before you leave the package out. Or drop it off with the carrier shown on your label.
- Our lab traces your frame, makes the lenses and fits them.
- Your sunglasses come home. Return shipping is included.
Shipping includes coverage up to $100. That's not full-value insurance. Ask us before shipping a frame worth more.
Lab time is 5 to 7 business days after your frames arrive, plus shipping. Need it faster? Expedited lab processing is $24.95 per order, covers every pair, and takes 3 to 4 business days in the lab. Full steps: How It Works.
What if the lenses aren't right?
- Lenses made wrong: manufacturing errors are corrected separately at no charge, including necessary shipping, and don't use up your free remake.
- Prescription doesn't feel right, or you can't adapt: every pair, prescription or not, includes one free remake within 30 days. Contact us first. Approved remakes include prepaid ground shipping both ways. Drop your securely packed glasses with the carrier shown on your label. There's no pickup or mailer charge for this benefit.
- The free remake doesn't cover scratches, accidental damage, loss, theft, frame repairs, changes of preference or lens upgrades. Optional Lens Care covers scratches and accidental damage: $15 per pair for one year or $25 per pair for two years. A new mailer is paid separately for each Lens Care claim.
- Terms: returns, remakes and warranty.
