How Do Single-Vision, Bifocal and Progressive Lenses Differ?

Compare the viewing ranges and visible differences among single-vision, bifocal and progressive lenses before choosing replacement lenses.

Single-vision lenses correct one viewing range. Bifocals combine distance and near correction in distinct areas. Progressives move gradually from distance through intermediate to near correction without a visible dividing line. The right choice depends on your prescription, the distances you use most and whether your frame can support the required fit.

What does each lens design do?

  • Single vision: One prescription across the lens for a single viewing range, such as distance or reading. If you need correction at different distances, you may use separate pairs.
  • Bifocal: Two viewing areas in one lens. The upper area is generally for distance and the lower segment for near tasks. The segment is separate and may have a visible line.
  • Progressive: A gradual change in power from distance at the top to near at the bottom, with an intermediate area between them. There is no visible line separating the areas.

How should you choose?

Start with your current glasses prescription and the tasks you want one pair to handle. A distance-only or reading-only need may point toward single vision. If you need both distance and near correction in one pair, ask your prescriber or an optical professional whether bifocals or progressives suit your prescription and daily routine. If your prescription includes an ADD value, our guide to prescription fields explains that number. An ADD value alone does not choose the lens design for you.

Frame fit matters for multifocal lenses. The lens needs enough usable space for its viewing areas and accurate fitting measurements. See our guide to progressives in existing frames before choosing that design for a favorite pair.
